During the League season, athletes may receive coaching, training, or lessons in that sport from a source other than the team’s coaching staff. It is the philosophy of the Minnesota State High School League that athletes should have the opportunity to engage in a variety of activities prior to and following the high school sports season provided that these activities are voluntary and not influenced or directed by a salaried or non-salaried member of the athlete’s high school coaching staff. The presence of the athlete’s high school coach as a participant violates the intent of the rule which seeks to prevent school personnel from exerting undue influence on athletes to participate on non-school teams or activities. The exclusion to this rule is when there is a coach/child relationship engaging in activities of the sport or if the athlete possesses a team-approved off-season waiver.
